Understanding Period Problems in Ayurveda:

Menstrual problems such as irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, painful cramps, PMS, and amenorrhea are increasingly common among women of all age groups. In Ayurveda, such issues are viewed as an imbalance in the doshas—primarily Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and can be addressed with natural remedies, diet, and lifestyle changes that restore harmony to the body.

In Ayurveda, the menstrual cycle is governed by the Apana Vata a sub-dosha of Vata that controls downward movement, elimination, and reproduction. When Apana Vata or other doshas are imbalanced, it can result in disorders like:

  • Kashtartava: Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
  • Artava Kshaya: Scanty or irregular periods (oligomenorrhea)
  • Rakta pradara: Excessive bleeding (menorrhagia)
  • Nashta Artava: Absence of periods (amenorrhea)
  • PMS Symptoms: Irritability, mood swings, bloating, breast tenderness

For Irregular Periods:

  • Ashoka (Saraca asoca): Balances hormones and regulates menstruation.
  • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): Nourishes reproductive tissues and balances Vata and Pitta.
  • Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Detoxifies and strengthens immunity.

Home Remedy:

  • Boil 1 tsp of dried Shatavari powder in a cup of milk. Drink daily for 2–3 weeks before expected cycle.

For Periods Cramps:

  • Hing (Asafoetida): Relieves spasms and promotes Apana Vata flow.
  • Ajwain (Carom Seeds): Effective for cramps and bloating.
  • Dashamoola: A group of ten roots used to reduce inflammation and pain.

Home Remedy:

  • Mix a pinch of hing in warm water and drink on an empty stomach during menstruation.

For Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD):

PCOD is a health condition that affects one in every 10 women. PCOD is the result of hormonal imbalance in women in which testosterone levels cause different symptoms in the body. Due to PCOS, any woman is at risk of weight gain, pelvic pain, acne, depression, and irregular menstrual cycles. In some cases, women with PCOD may also face challenges in conceiving. But with proper treatment, diet, and exercise routine, PCOD can be treated.

The simplest and effective treatment for PCOD is Ayurveda. You can consume Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) capsules with aloe vera. It helps purify the blood and gradually restores the health of the uterus, resulting in regular, healthy menstrual cycles.

For Menorrhagia (Heavy Bleeding):

Menorrhagia is defined as menstruation with heavy bleeding at regular intervals. It is one of the most common menstrual problems in women. Some women have reported heavy bleeding for 6 to 7 days along with weakness and other health issues during periods. According to Ayurveda Vaidya, Niranjan fruit (China fruit) is the best and effective medicine for menorrhagia.

  • Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa): Strengthens the uterine lining and controls bleeding.
  • Nagkesar (Mesua ferrea): Natural coagulant, reduces excessive flow.
  • Mochras (Salmalia malabarica): Cools Pitta and controls bleeding.

Home Remedy:

  • Mix 1 tsp of Nagkesar powder with honey and consume twice a day during heavy flow.
  • You can soak the Niranjan fruit in water for 1.5 to two hours. Wait till the fruit becomes the size of a lemon. Now crush its pulp and squeeze it in water. Add some sugar and drink it. It effectively controls heavy bleeding during menstruation.

For The Smell of Menstrual Blood:

Many women find the smell of menstrual blood unpleasant during and after their periods. You may experience this condition despite maintaining hygiene. A normal vaginal discharge has no smell. But a foul-smelling vaginal discharge is a distinguishing point between a normal and abnormal menstruation. Foul smell during menstruation is not normal, so it should be considered a serious problem. It may be the result of an infection in the vagina or in the cervix. This foul smell is called aartdushti in Ayurveda and can be treated with manjistha which helps in blood purification.

For Missed Periods:

  • Kumari (Aloe Vera): Stimulates uterine contractions and clears blockage in Vata.
  • Sesame Seeds: Warm in nature, they help stimulate menstruation.

Home Remedy:

  • Take 1 tbsp of aloe vera gel mixed with a pinch of turmeric on an empty stomach for a few weeks (not during menstruation).

For Leucorrhoea:

A white or yellowish sticky discharge from the vagina or uterine cavity is called leucorrhoea. It often increases at the time of ovulation or before menstruation. The condition is also aggravated by sexual stimulation. Excessive discharge, however, may indicate an abnormal condition. A yellow or creamy white discharge, especially if it is thick, often contains pus and provides evidence of an infection. According to Ayurveda, eating one or two bananas a day can easily solve this problem.

For PMS and Mood Swings

  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): Calms the mind and reduces anxiety.
  • Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi): Balances hormonal mood shifts.
  • Licorice (Yashtimadhu): Supports adrenal function and soothes cramps.

Home Remedy:

  • Brew brahmi tea with a little honey for emotional balance and better sleep during PMS.

Common Problems:

According to Ayurveda, cow ghee is an effective Ayurvedic medicine for many health problems. “Phala-ghrita, which is prepared using cow ghee, is considered extremely useful for gynaecological problems. From irregular periods to pregnancy, it works equally and effectively. “Ayurveda believes that the recipe for this ghee was invented by Ashwini Kumar (doctor of the gods).”

Final Thoughts:

Ayurveda views menstruation as a natural purification process and encourages women to live in harmony with their cycles. Rather than suppressing symptoms with synthetic medication, Ayurveda promotes root-level healing through herbs, diet, lifestyle, and inner awareness. By adopting these time-tested remedies and rituals, you can bring lasting balance to your menstrual health and overall well-being.
